Abstract
Purpose: Innovative synthetic biological dressings composed of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are developed in recent years and newer types are continuously getting clinically available for better and effective burn wound treatment. Many researches have shown collagen¡¯s important roles in wound healing for many years now. we evaluated the clinical efficacy of recently developed innovative product of RegencellTM, composed of collagens derived from human dermis in powder form, in treating burn wounds.

Methods: The study was conducted on 30 patients admitted to our burn center from May 1, 2008 to October 31, 2008 who had escharectomy or skin graft due to the burn injury and those who had open full thickness wounds smaller than 3 cm. We investigated each patient based on factors of age, sex, etiology, degree, number of skin graft performed, treated wound area, time of treatment, time it took for epithelialization, date of pain reduction showed, side effect, convenient usage factors of product and etc.

Results: Of the 30 patients investigated, 21 patients were male and 9 were female. The most frequent etiology was flame burn (14 patients), followed by scald burn (7 patients), contact burn (7 patients) and electrical burn (2 patients). The mean TBSA of full thickness burn was 11.7% (1¡35%), the mean length of RegencellTM application was 23.4 days, and the mean number of skin graft performed was 1.4 times. Various areas were treated such as facial, neck, arms, legs and perineal region. The mean size of wound in diameter is 1.78 cm (1.2¡2.8 cm). The length of time it took for epithelialization of the wound area up to 50% and 100% completely were 9.2 days and 19.2 days respectively. 80% of patients showed the reduction of pain at the mean of 5.5 days after RegencellTM (human collagen powder) applications and no side effects were reported on any subject.

Conclusion: In our study, we applied human collagen powder on burn wounds of various locations and obtained faster epithelialization time, reduction in pain, simple to use and other clinical benefits compare to conventional wet dressing materials.
